यूँ तो दिनकर जी की कविताओं के प्रायः नौ संकलन हैं, किन्तु उनके प्रमुख काव्य-संकलन 'चक्रवाल', 'आज के लोकप्रिय कवि', जिसका संकलन श्री मन्मथनाथ गुप्त ने किया था, और 'रश्मिलोक' व 'संचयिता' हैं। दिनकर जी ने 'रश्मिलोक' का स्वत्वाधिकार मुझे दिया है। अतएव इस संग्रह में इन पुस्तकों में सर्वाधिक आवृत्ति जिन कविताओं की हुई है, उसे ही मैंने प्रमुखता दी है। ‘सीपी और शंख' में दिनकर जी ने विभिन्न भाषाओं के अपने कुछ पसन्दीदा कवियों का अनुवाद संकलित किया है। किन्तु बहुत-से दिनकर-प्रेमी यह मानते हैं कि यह अनुवाद उन कविताओं से मात्र प्रेरणा लेकर किया गया है और इसमें मौलिकता है। किन्तु दिनकर जी की दूसरी डी.एच. लॉरेंस की कविताओं के संग्रह ‘आत्मा की आँखें' से कोई कविता 'चक्रवाल', 'आज के लोकप्रिय कवि' व ‘संचयिता' में प्रायः नहीं मिली, फिर भी मैंने चयन की प्रक्रिया की अवहेलना कर इस संग्रह को अद्यतन बनाने के लिए ‘आत्मा की आँखें' से ‘मच्छर' और 'आदमी' नामक शीर्षक दो कविताओं को सम्मिलित किया है। यह कविताएँ दिनकर जी की प्रमुख कविताओं, मेरी पसन्द के अनुसार नहीं, बल्कि दिनकर जी की प्रतिनिधि कविताओं के तौर पर चुनी गयी हैं। आशा है। कि दिनकर साहित्य के अध्येता व स्नेही जनों को इस संग्रह के द्वारा सम्पूर्णता में तो सम्भव नहीं है किन्तु फिर भी दिनकर जी की सम्पूर्ण काव्य की एक छटा जरूर दिख जायेगी। -भूमिका से
