‘सच्ची रामायण’ ई.वी. रामासामी नायकर 'पेरियार' की बहुचर्चित और सबसे विवादास्पद कृति रही है। पेरियार रामायण को एक राजनीतिक ग्रन्थ मानते थे। उनका कहना था कि इसे दक्षिणवासी अनार्यों पर उत्तर के आर्यों की विजय और प्रभुत्व को जायज़ ठहराने के लिए लिखा गया और यह ग़ैर-ब्राह्मणों पर ब्राह्मणों और महिलाओं पर पुरुषों के वर्चस्व का उपकरण है। ‘रामायण’ की मूल अन्तर्वस्तु को उजागर करने के लिए पेरियार ने 'वाल्मीकि रामायण' के अनुवादों सहित; अन्य राम कथाओं, जैसे—'कंब रामायण', 'तुलसीदास की रामायण' (रामचरितमानस), ‘बौद्ध रामायण’, ‘जैन रामायण’ आदि के अनुवादों तथा उनसे सम्बन्धित ग्रन्थों का चालीस वर्षों तक अध्ययन किया और 'रामायण पादीरंगल' (रामायण के पात्र) में उसका निचोड़ प्रस्तुत किया। यह पुस्तक 1944 में तमिल भाषा में प्रकाशित हुई। इसका अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद ‘द रामायण : अ ट्रू रीडिंग' नाम से 1959 में प्रकाशित हुआ। यह किताब हिन्दी में 1968 में ‘सच्ची रामायण' नाम से प्रकाशित हुई थी, जिसके प्रकाशक लोकप्रिय बहुजन कार्यकर्ता ललई सिंह थे। 9 दिसम्बर, 1969 को तत्कालीन उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने इस पर प्रतिबन्ध लगा दिया और पुस्तक की सभी प्रतियों को ज़ब्त कर लिया। ललई सिंह यादव ने इस प्रतिबन्ध और ज़ब्ती को इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट में चुनौती दी। वे हाईकोर्ट में मुक़दमा जीत गए। सरकार ने हाईकोर्ट के निर्णय के ख़िलाफ़ सुप्रीम कोर्ट में अपील की। 16 सितम्बर, 1976 को सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इस मामले पर सर्वसम्मति से फ़ैसला देते हुए राज्य सरकार की अपील को ख़ारिज कर दिया और अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता के पक्ष में निर्णय सुनाया। प्रस्तुत किताब में ‘द रामायण : अ ट्रू रीडिंग' का नया, सटीक, सुपाठ्य और अविकल हिन्दी अनुवाद दिया गया है। साथ ही इसमें 'सच्ची रामायण' पर केन्द्रित लेख व पेरियार का जीवनचरित भी दिया गया है, जिससे इसकी महत्ता बहुत बढ़ गई है। यह भारत के सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक आन्दोलन के इतिहास को समझने के इच्छुक हर व्यक्ति के लिए एक आवश्यक पुस्तक है।
