PRODUCT DETAILS

Unveil the literary legacy of Munshi Premchand with Ramcharcha (Hardcover), a captivating work by this iconic Hindi author.  This book offers a glimpse into Premchand's rich literary journey, while also showcasing his powerful storytelling abilities.

A Life Dedicated to Literature:

Born as Dhanpat Rai in 1880, Premchand's literary career began in 1901.  Initially writing under the pseudonym Nawab Rai, he explored themes of love, social issues, and patriotism in his Urdu works.  Ram Vilas Sharma, a renowned Hindi literary critic, sheds light on Premchand's early, unpublished play in his article "Pehli Rachna" ("The First Work").  This play, believed to be Premchand's first literary endeavor, tackled a bold social theme.

From Urdu to Hindi and Beyond:

Premchand's published works showcase his versatility as a writer.  Asrare Maabid, his debut novel, was originally written in Urdu and later translated into Hindi as Devasthan Rahasya.  He continued to explore social issues through novels like Hamkhurma o Hamsavaab (Hindi version: Prema).

Patriotism and Censorship:

Premchand's fervent patriotism shone through in his 1908 collection of short stories, Soz-e-Watan.  This collection, however, did not resonate well with the British authorities.  Confiscated and banned, it marked a turning point in Premchand's career.  He adopted the pen name Premchand, suggested by Dayanarayan Nigam, and continued writing under this pseudonym.  His first story under this new name, published in "Bade Ghar Ki Beti" magazine in December 1910, marked a fresh chapter in his literary journey.
