Jaishankar Prasad (1890-1937) was a prominent poet, playwright, novelist, and essayist of the Chhayavad era in Hindi literature.
Pratidhwani (1922) was his first poetry collection, featuring a compilation of his romantic works.
Chhayavad was a modern movement in Hindi literature that began in the 1910s. It developed in opposition to realism and romanticism. Chhayavad poets wrote on themes like love, beauty, nature, and mysticism.
Prasad was one of the founding pillars of Chhayavad. His poems showcase depth of emotions, melodious language, and impactful use of imagery.
Jaishankar Prasad was born on January 30, 1890, in Varanasi.
He belonged to a wealthy merchant family, second only to the Kashi Naresh (King of Kashi) in terms of wealth.
Due to the untimely deaths of his father and elder brother, he had to leave school after the eighth grade and stay home.
He continued his education at home, studying Hindi, Sanskrit, and Persian languages and literature. Additionally, he gained knowledge of Vedic literature and Indian philosophy.
He was a gifted child from a young age.
By the age of eight or nine, he had memorized the Amarakosha (lexicon) and Laghu Kaumudi (grammar text), while also writing poems under the pseudonym Kaladhar.
Jaishankar Prasad passed away on November 15, 1937, in Varanasi.
His works have left an indelible mark on Hindi literature, and he remains one of the most popular Hindi poets even today.
