प्राण को प्रतिष्ठित भारतीय कॉमिक बुक कैरेक्टर ‘चाचा चौधरी’ बनाने के लिए जाना जाता है। लाल पगड़ी और सफेद मूंछों वाला एक अधेड़ उम्र का आदमी बुद्धि, बुद्धिमत्ता और समस्या को सुलझाने की क्षमता के लिए जाना जाता है। जल्द ही यह घर-घर में प्रसिद्ध हो गया। ‘चाचा चौधरी’ की लोकप्रियता को देखते हुए कई भारतीय भाषाओं में इसे प्रकाशित किया गया।

प्राण ने बतौर कार्टूनिस्ट अपना करियर 1960 के दशक में शुरू किया था। शुरुआती दौर में वह दिल्ली के एक अखबार मिलाप में काम किया करते थे। बाद में उन्होंने ब्लिट्ज और इंडियन एक्सप्रेस सहित कई बड़े प्रकाशनों के लिए काम किया। साल 1971 में उन्होंने अपनी एक कॉमिक बुक सीरिज शुरू की, जिसमें श्रीमतीजी, बिल्लू और पिंकी जैसे पात्रों को शामिल किया। धीरे-धीरे भारत के हर बच्चे और व्यस्क की जुबान पर इन सभी किरदारों का नाम चढ़ गया।

देश में कॉमिक्स को प्रचलित करने के योगदान के लिए प्राण को वर्ष 1999 में भारत का सबसे बड़ा नागरिक पुरुस्कार पद्म श्री से सम्मानित किया गया। वह यह सम्मान पाने वाले पहले भारतीय कार्टूनिस्ट थे।
