शकील बदायूंनी की पैदाइश 20 अगस्त, 1916 ई० को मौलवी जमील अहमद साहब कादरी के घर बदायूं में हुई। आपके वालिद भी शायर थे और उस जमाने में ‘सोखता’ तखल्लुस फरमाते थे। ‘शकील’ साहब ने शुरूआती तालीम जिसमें उर्दू, फारसी, अरबी और अंग्रेजी जबान शामिल है मौलवी अब्दुल ग़फ़्फ़ार, मौलवी अब्दुल रहमान और बाबू रामचन्द्र जी से हासिल की। इसके बाद शकील ने 1937 ई० में अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम विश्वविद्यालय में दाखिला ले लिया और वहीं से 1942 ई० में बी.ए. का इम्तेहान पास किया और दिल्ली में मुलाजिमत शुरू की। मुशायरों में शकील का नाम मशहूर हस्तियों के तर्ज पर लिया जाता था। दिलकश कलाम और जादू जगाती आवाज़ से सुनने वालों को बेखुद करके खूब तारीफ़ बटोरा करते थे। फिल्मी दुनिया में एक गीतकार की हैसियत से आप अजीम तरीन शख्सियत में शुमार थे। उनकी शोहरत का सितारा तब चमका जब उर्दू भाषा व शायरी पर पतन के बादल मण्डरा रहे थे। ऐसे ही ऩाजुक वक्त में ‘शकील’ ने अपनी बेहतरीन शायरी, दिल की गहराईयों में उतर जाने वाले नगमों का जादू जगाकर हर वर्ग के लोगों के दिलों पर राज करने लगे।.
