उर्दू के मशहूर शायर “क़तील” शिफ़ाई की पैदाइश 24 दिसम्बर 1919 को हरीपुर हज़ारा (पाकिस्तान) में हुई थी। कतील शफाई का ख़ानदानी नाम औरंगज़ेब रखाँ है। आपकी परवरिश बहुत ही अच्छे घरेलू माहौल में हुई। आपने शुरूआती तालीम गवर्नमेंट हाई स्कूल हरीपुर हज़ारा में हासिल की। “शिफ़ाई” का शब्द आपने अपने उस्ताद हकीम मौहम्मद “शफ़ा” से जुड़े होने की वजह से जोड़ा। हालाँकि आपकी इस्लाह शागिर्दी का ज़माना बहुत ही कम रहा इसके बावजूद आपने उस्ताद का नाम अपने साथ जोड़ा, यह एक अच्छे और ईमानदार शागिर्द की पहचान है। क़तील साहब के वालिद का इंतकाल बचपन ही में हो गया था जिसकी वजह से उन्हें बड़ी मुसीबतों का सामना किया । वालिद के इंतकाल के बाद क़तील साहब ने पढ़ाई छोड़कर स्पोर्ट की दुकान खोली। बाद में बज़ाज़ी का काम शुरू किया और नाकाम होने पर वतन छोड़कर रावलपिण्डी चले गए। जहाँ उन्होंने साठ रुपये माहवार पर “मरी ट्रांसपोर्ट कम्पनी” में नौकरी की। 1946 में “अदबे-तलीफ़” के चौधरी नज़ीर अहमद ने “क़तील” को लाहौर बुलवाया और “अदबे-लतीफ़” का सह-सम्पादक के ओहदे पर रख लिया। लाहौर के साप्ताहिक अख़बार “स्टार” में “क़तील” साहब की पहली ग़ज़ल साया हुई जिसके सम्पादक “क़मर” जलालाबादी थे। जनवरी 1947 में लाहौर के एक फ़िल्म निर्माता ने अपनी फ़िल्म के गाने लिखवाने के लिए क़तील को लाहौर बुला लिया और फिर वह वहीं के हो रहे । उनकी एक किताब “मुतरिबा” पर पाकिस्तान का सबसे बड़ा साहित्यिक पुरस्कार “आदम जी एवार्ड” भी मिला। उन्होंने कई फ़िल्मों के बेहतरीन गीतों पर सोलह एवार्ड हासिल किए। इस दौर में खूब तरक्की करने वाले शायरों में “क़तील” शिफ़ाई का नाम भी शुमार है। साल 2003 की शुरुआत में क़तील शफाई ने इस दुनिया से विदा ले लिया और इस तरह उर्दू की एक बड़ी हस्ती हम सब से दूर हो गयी।-- “फैला है इतना हुस्न, कि इस कायनात में इन्सां को बार-बार जनम लेना चाहिए”.
